Environmental policy

1599 at the Royal College is an event venue. The building of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow houses a collection of unique rooms and function suits available for formal  functions, private dining, conferences, meetings and events, and bespoke weddings. Our function and meeting rooms each tell a part of the College’s story through history, with individual character, charm, and period features.

The senior management of 1599 at The Royal College Ltd is committed to its environmental responsibilities and has established a structured Environmental Management System, which sets objectives and targets to improve our performance. Our main objectives for improvement include:

  1. Reduction of energy consumption
  2. Reduction of CO2 emissions
  3. Reduction and recycling of solid waste

Sustainable development policy

1599 at the Royal College is committed to promoting sustainability. Concern for the environment and promoting a broader sustainability agenda are integral to 1599 at The Royal College’s professional activities and the management of the organization. We aim to follow and promote good sustainability practices to reduce the environmental impacts of all our activities, and to help our associated partners to do the same.

Principles

  • Our Sustainable Development policy is based on the following principles:
  • To comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.
  • To integrate sustainability considerations into all our events and business decisions.
  • To ensure that staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Development Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
  • To minimize the impact on the sustainability of all office and event activities.
  • To ensure that all associated partners are aware of our Sustainability Policy and encourage them to develop sustainable management practices.
  • To review on a regular basis and continually strive to improve our sustainability performance.

Bronze Award Green Tourism

1599 at the Royal College, Glasgow has received a Green Tourism award – a key milestone in its efforts to reduce its climate footprint.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow, is home to 1599 at the Royal College, an events venue open to all, which caters for weddings, conferences, meetings, fine dining, graduation balls and much more.

The bronze award was given in recognition of the College's work to embed an environmentally friendly approach to People, Planet and Places towards its journey to becoming net zero by 2040.

Highlights include offering delicious, plant–based and locally sourced food, a significant reduction in waste, removal of single-use plastic, and encouraging active and public transport to the College, which is nestled in the heart of the city. The award also recognised the College’s work in health and wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Richie Homes, Deputy Head of Operations, added: “We are delighted to achieve this important award, and it’s a real reflection of the commitment to our Fellows and Members to protect health and the planet.

“While we have reached an important milestone, we are not resting on our laurels – environmental sustainability remains a key focus for us and we are already planning our next steps.”
